Government Says Oil Spill Aftermath Under Control.....Maybe....Perhaps....

All's well.  No worries, mate.  Maybe....perhaps....we'll see.....

That's what the US government is telling the public about the terrible consequences of the horrific BP caused oil disaster in the Gulf.

Doesn't that ease your mind, and especially for those residents of the affected Gulf states?

From Justin Gillis at the NYTimes"The government is expected to announce on Wednesday that three-quarters of the oil from the Deepwater Horizon leak has already evaporated, dispersed, been captured or otherwise eliminated — and that much of the rest is so diluted that it does not seem to pose much additional risk of harm."

However, notice the words "does not seem" in the last line above.

Then comes the following in the article: "A government report finds that about 26 percent of the oil released from BP’s runaway well is still in the water or onshore in a form that could, in principle, cause new problems. But most is light sheen at the ocean surface or in a dispersed form below the surface, and federal scientists believe that it is breaking down rapidly in both places.

“ 'There’s absolutely no evidence that there’s any significant concentration of oil that’s out there that we haven’t accounted for,' said Jane Lubchenco, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the lead agency in producing the new report.

"She emphasized, however, that the government remained concerned about the ecological damage that has already occurred and the potential for more, and said it would continue monitoring the gulf. [Bold added]

“ 'I think we don’t know yet the full impact of this spill on the ecosystem or the people of the gulf,' Dr. Lubchenco said."

Lubchenco's statement that all significant concentration of oil has been accounted for should be taken with health dose of salt.

Her record of footdragging in the BP caused disaster was awful.  She also refused to contradict BP CEO Tony Hayward's claim that there were no underwater oil plumes despite the evidence, attempting to muzzle researchers who discovered the oil plumes.

Their actions and statements made one wonder for whom Lubcheco and former Coast Guard commandant Thad "I trust Tony Harward" Allen in charge of overseeing the administration response to the oil spill, worked for: the US government or BP?  They should have both been fired or relieved of command.
