How Progressive are the Progressives?
What took them so long? Some so called progressives just now waking up
to the reality of Obama's placatory, ingratiating, ineffective, DINO
approach to governing.
Campaign for America's Future is holding its three day conference.America's Future Now, in Washington.
As Reuters reports via CommonDreams: "At an annual conference of grassroots progressives, they said the euphoria and high expectations after Obama's victory had lulled them into a false sense of security, and hopes for his success had sometimes limited their criticism.
"That has changed, they said, because of what they called Obama's go-easy approach on Wall Street, ineffectual efforts to reduce high unemployment, watered-down healthcare and financial regulation reforms and escalation of the Afghanistan war."
Unfortunately, some of their speakers indicate that this group perhaps tends to centrism not progressivism.
The Reuters article includes this: "It is not our job to make this president or this administration comfortable. It is our job to make him do the right thing," said Darcy Burner, head of the Progressive Congress Action Fund."
This is the same Darcy Burner who told a single payer advocate, who was to speak to the Progressive Caucus about the shortcomings (he thought it doomed to fail) of the public option compared to single payer health care coverage, that they would construe talking about the public option----even comparing it to single payer---as an attack on members of the Progressive Caucus. Just how progressive is Darcy Burner?
Another speaker at this confab is Senator Dick Durbin. This is the so called progressive who, on the floor of the Senate, admonished "bleeding heart liberals" to be open to cuts in Social Security and Medicare. Just how progressive is Dick Durbin?
And as for millionaire Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, she's a ineffective Dem majority leader who couldn't even get the public option in the House version of the health care bill, continues to support war funding, , was hypocritical about the NSA spying scandal, betrayed the American people with the terrible financial industry bailout bill, caved to the GOP on offshore drilling legislation, and maintains an ongoing minority mind set that dominates her less than stellar record as majority leader.
Just how progressive is this progressive organization? That any of the above are speakers at its conference appears to answer that question. Perhaps the organizers of America's Future Now assume that even a myopic DINO can find an acorn nugget occasionally.
