Stewardship of the Environment and Justice Demands Destroyers of Same Must Be Held Accountable

Just read an article in The Guardian about the world's top firms causing $2.2 trillion in environmental damage.

An excerpt:

"The cost of pollution and other damage to the natural environment caused by the world's biggest companies would wipe out more than one-third of their profits if they were held financially accountable, a major unpublished study for the United Nations has found.

"The report comes amid growing concern that no one is made to pay for most of the use, loss and damage of the environment, which is reaching crisis proportions in the form of pollution and the rapid loss of freshwater, fisheries and fertile soils."

And in the 21st century, environmentalists are still battling pollution and polluters, often moving two steps forward then being pushed three steps back by corporate polluters and corporate controlled government that fails to effectively respond to polluters and climate change.

Corporate irresponsibility and deliberate destructiveness aided and abetted by government.

There's an old song by Tom Lehrer called "Pollution," that should be played regularly...humor can make a point about the deadly serious.

Some of the lyrics:

"If you visit American city,
You will find it very pretty.
Just two things of which you must beware:
Don't drink the water and don't breathe the air.

"Pollution, pollution,
They got smog and sewage and mud.
Turn on your tap and get hot and cold running crud.

"See the halibuts and the sturgeons
Being wiped out by detergents.
Fish gotta swim and birds gotta fly,
But they don't last long if they try.

"Pollution, pollution,
You can use the latest toothpaste,
And then rinse your mouth with industrial waste."

Listen to it here.

And replay the 1971 "Keep American Beautiful" public service ad with Iron Eyes Cody, but call it Keep America Beautiful and Healthy" or "Quit Killing Our Country, Its People, and the Planet" for good measure.
