Max Baucus Proves He Has No Ethics and Embarrasses Montana and the U.S. Senate
While I don't really care about Senator Max Baucus' love life, he ignored basic ethics in nominating his mistress to be the next US Attorney for Montana.
Even though past and recent history has shown senatorial ethics and congressional ethics to be oxymorons, continuing tabloid antics a la Ensign and the nominating brouhaha from DINO Baucus seem to highlight the arrogance, self-serving, and maintenance of government of, by, and for the wealthy few emanating from elected denizens of Capitol Hill.
Concerning Baucus' nomination of his lover, law professor, Jonathan Turley, writes: "I also fail to see why Hanes was one of the best candidates for this position. She (sic) background would not naturally make her a candidate for the top federal prosecutor position, let alone one of those nominated by the Senator."
However, this nomination (and its withdrawal after Baucus and Hanes began to live together) pales in comparison to how DINO, Max Baucus, another wealthy member of the Senate exclusive 100 club, screwed the American people.
As Marcy Wheeler reminds us at Emptywheel: "But while we’re getting all scandalized about Baucus’s bad judgment, let’s talk about the bad judgment that did hurt taxpayers, rather than the one that almost did: the way in which the revolving door on his committee staff made it very easy for the insurance industry to write the Senate’s health care reform bill. I’m much more offended–and directly affected–by the fact that former Wellpoint VP Liz Fowler wrote the Senate health care bill than I am that Baucus nominated, then withdrew, his mistress for a plum job."
When Congress was under the control of a Republican majority, pharmaceutical lobbyists wrote the Medicare Prescirption Drug Bill. a profitable billions of dollars government giveaway to their companies but a pain for seniors.
And now with the Senate and House under DINO control, health insurance execs wrote the Senate health care bill.
Over the past two decades, current members of the Senate Finance Committee that Baucus now chairs collected $50 million from the health care industry.
Baucus is just the latest example of the rot that is endemic in Washington, continuing under a president who promised change.
Unfortunately, regular hardworking, play-by-the-rules Americans get shafted repeatedly by Baucus and his ilk---DINOs and obstructionist Republicans and DINOs who support and promote government of, by, and for the rich few and corporate contributors---in the Augean stables also known as Congress that need to be cleaned out
