Why Is the Obama Administration Ignoring HR 676, Medicare for All?
Why is the Obama administration trying to re-invent the health care reform wheel?
Only the US, among the industrialized nations, doesn't provide single-payer, universal, government administered health care but relies on increasingly unaffordable, available to only some, employer based, for profit, private corporations administered health care that cherry pick recipients and commit egregious anti-human rights and other fraud.
Rep. John Conyers' HR 676, Medicare for All is the answer to this horrible health care catastrophe, but since conservatives killed President Harry Truman's attempts at single-payer, universal health care, Democratic administrations in the last 50 years fearfully avoided what other nations provide successfully, and continue the awful, failed system still in place.
Now that health care reform is one of the demands of the American people, 50 millions of whom have no coverage because they can' t afford it, even more so during this deepening economic crisis, we will again witness half measures while the real answer is ignored.
!4,000 people lose their health care coverage every day in the US. Many young people have no health care insurance because 66% of them are too poor or close to poor working low paying jobs to afford it.
President Obama apparently plans to nominate Governor Kathleen Sibelius as Secretary of HHS. While she may be a good nominee, her consensus building and go slow approach used in conservative Kansas is not be the answer to this national health care crisis which has become a dire emergency. The next 18,000 people who die every year in this country because of lack of health insurance may not be able to wait that long.
If the Obama administration plans the same half measures to meet the health care debacle that is killing people as those in the recovery bill that is insufficient to address this economic catastrophe, and ignores HR 676, Medicare for All, then the US has no right to call itself a leader or a major power when other industrialized nations have for decades treated health care as a human right for all, and the US still refuses to do so in the 21st century.
While Obama is in Canada today, he should study and emulate its excellent health care coverage for all.
