Happy 232nd Birthday, USA
However, my mood is not celebratory this year. The US, thanks to the criminal Bush administration, is in the sixth year of an occupation of Iraq, following a pre-emptive, illegal invasion, that has cost both countries so much in lives, destruction, and devastation. The US is also in the eighth year of the conflict in Afghanistan. Regular people are suffering in the US, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Here in the US, the catastrophic economy---with stagnant wages, tremendous job losses (because of this administration's promotion and support of corporate offshoring), skyrocketing oil prices, food prices dramatically increasing, health care unaffordable, while billions soon to be trillions are flowing into the trough of "war" spending at the expense of needed domestic priorities and programs like replacing aging and crumbling infastructure---is causing great hardship and there is increasing social and economic injustice as the chasm between the wealthy and the rest of us widens. And this was caused by the Bush administration and its horrible policies like tax cuts for the rich, its support and protection of the haves and have mores, and its disdain and active disregard for the common good.
What the Founding Fathers (wish there had been some Mothers) pledged with their lives and created with the hallowed words of this Declaration of Independence and later with the Constitution has been trampled on and besmirched by this worst administration ever, a Republican, authoritarian, imperialistic administration that tortures, spies on its citizens, among a litany of heinous crimes it has committed, and is anti-Constitution, anti-human rights, anti-rule of law, and, in the final analysis, anti-American.
As the late, honorable, inspiring member of the House of Representatives, Barbara Jordan, once said: "“What the people want is very simple - they want an America as good as its promise.”
Unfortunately, instead of helping to fulfill that promise, the Bush administration dragged this country into the depths of depravity and crime..
Bush and Cheney, without any doubt, should be impeached.
