House Dem Leadership Bailed Out Wall St But Gives No Help to the Unemployed
Just when you think that House Democratic leaders may have overcome a smidgen of their spinelessness, reports like these dash any hope for this group of invertebrates.
From the Washington Post: "House Democrats are likely to drop a 13-week extension of unemployment insurance benefits from a major spending package that includes continued funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and that would create a new education benefit for military veterans returning from the battlefields.
"House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) said yesterday that the unemployment insurance provision would "probably not" be part of the final package of war and domestic spending, which has become the most important legislative battle this spring between congressional Democrats and President Bush.
"After huddling in the offices of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for more than two hours yesterday, House Democrats emerged to say they were still undecided about how to pare down the overall cost of the supplemental spending bill.
"The unemployment insurance provision is one of several measures likely to be cut in an effort to win the support of the Blue Dogs and to increase the opposition to a veto that President Bush has threatened over several aspects of the bill."
Chris at AmericaBlog offers a great comment about these weak Dem House leaders:
"This is so pathetic. They go along with bailing out Wall Street without a peep yet now they are going to throw the jobless under the bus. Regular Americans who are losing their jobs in part because of Wall Street and their failures are getting the shaft again. Where are the "Blue Dog Democrats" and their "conservative" principles when we shovel out billions to maintain luxurious lifestyles on Wall Street? Answers? Anyone? It's incredible to think that as a nation we can't afford to extend jobless benefits for 13 weeks yet we can afford to ignore the gambling problems of Wall Street. How on earth do Democrats ever get the reputation for being spineless and wobbly? Gosh, I can't imagine."
That about covers it.
House Dem leaders will fund the Iraq and Afghanistan conflict and bail out Wall Street but are so afraid of a Bush veto if they support funding unemployment extension that they back down on Democratic Party principles of defending the common good.
In addition, the Blue Dog Dems keep gaming House Democratic leaders who don't have the moxie to stand up for hardworking Americans trampled by and suffering because of this Bush economic debacle. These so called Dem leaders apparently refuse to bring these nominal Democrats in line or find real Democratic candidates in their districts to challenge these immoral, blackmailing Blue Dogs in primaries.
We need more better Democrats and a change of Dem leadership in Congress. The permanent minority mindset of this crop of so called leaders, like Hoyer, that were there during the former House Republican over a decade majority control are worthless.
