Bushites Continue To Use Privacy Breaches To Influence Elections
Last night in the breaking news about the security and privacy breach of Barack Obama's passport file, Keith Olbermann mentioned that Joseph diGenova, the independent counsel in the 1992 investigation of the breach of Bill Clinton and his mother's passport files, thought these particular incidents probably were not crimes but merely inappropriate curiosity. DiGenova's opinion should be taken with a healthy dose of salt.
Mr. DiGenova, a conservative Republican Reagan flunky/appointee, did the first Bush White House's bidding and became a full fledged Bushite.
According to Consortium News, "Despite the evidence that Clinton’s files had been exploited to influence the outcome of a presidential election, diGenova concluded that there was no wrongdoing by anyone in the Bush administration."
Remember, Daddy Bush was running for a second term.
The article continues, "DiGenova added 'that certain White House personnel may have indirectly encouraged the search for Clinton’s passport files by making inquiry about the status of responses to [FOIA] requests.' As for the Oval Office, diGenova 'found no evidence that President Bush was involved in this matter.'
"DiGenova reserved his toughest criticism for State Department Inspector General Funk for suspecting that a crime had been committed in the first place. (Underline added.) DiGenova castigated Funk for 'a woefully inadequate understanding of the facts.'
"John Duncan, a senior lawyer in Funk’s office, protested diGenova’s findings of no criminal wrongdoing.
“ 'Astoundingly, [diGenova] has also concluded that no senior-level party to the search did anything improper whatever,' Duncan wrote. 'The Independent Counsel has provided his personal absolution to individuals who we found had attempted to use their U.S. Government positions to manipulate the election of President of the United States.' ”
So much for Mr. DiGenova's integrity.
He and his wife, Victoria Toensing, are partners in their own law firm. Ms. Toensing, a Republican attorney, defended Robert Novak for his outing of Valerie Plame, by repeatedly insisting Ms. Plame was not a covert agent. In a Washington Post op-ed piece Toensing did not disclose that she was a personal friend of Novak.
Toensing testified repeatedly before an amazed the House Oversight and Reform Committee that Plame was not a covert agent even though Plame's status as a covert agent had been confirmed prior to Toensing's testimony by the CIA and Valerie Plame herself in her appearance before the committee!
Victoria Toensing, another Republican right wing Reagan hack/appointee, has a history of making false statements.
So much for Ms. Toensing's integrity.
Quite a pair of Bushite hacks.
