White House and Congress Making Band-aid Solutions for Economic Crisis
If the initial reports about the "bipartisan" Congress and White House economic stimulus package are true, then Democratic leaders in Congress need to resign their positions and let real Democrats lead.
This from the NYTimes, "On her way into an evening meeting, Ms. Pelosi said there had been 'tremendous' progress during the day.
“ 'I’m hopeful,' she said. 'We’re still working through.'
"Democrats said the centerpiece of the plan would be a widely distributed tax rebate, perhaps totaling as much as $96.5 billion or roughly two-thirds of the total amount President Bush has said is needed to help jumpstart the economy. Aides cautioned, however, that the numbers were the subject of intense negotiations."
Tax rebates are the centerpiece! Are these people daft? According to this report, "An agreement was near after Pelosi dropped her bid for additional unemployment benefits and food stamp funding in exchange for a rebate providing all income-earners at least $300, said two congressional aides familiar with the talks. Boehner had opposed giving a rebate to the poorest workers who don't pay any income taxes.
"The proposal under discussion would give larger rebates to those who pay income taxes, and families with children would get an extra $300 per child, subject to a cap that is still being discussed, the aide said."
Do Democratic leaders think that these measly rebates will help those people who are struggling to make mortgage or rent payments, almost unaffordable health care coverage payments for those fortunate enough to have health care, while also paying for the increasing cost of other necessities? What planet are these Dems on? This is not the way to begin overcoming the terrible consequences of Dubya's economic debacle.
Last week I wrote that Bush and his cronies caused this economic disaster and Democratic leaders on the Hill should not trust him to be part of the solution. (Scroll down to read "Instead of Bush's Economic Plan, Let's Have Health Care For Every American" 1/18/07)
As usual, it seems the Democratic leadership forgot to get a backbone implant during their holiday vacations. They are taking bad advice from their Wall Street Rubinista pals, and allowing Bush, his administration lackeys, and Republican Congressional loyalists to make this economic crisis even worse.
I agree with Paul Krugman's assessment. It's a disappointing economic stimulus package made by a disappointing, frustrating, and weak Democratic leadership and a president who perpetrated this economic debacle on the country with the help of Congressional Republican Bushite lackeys.
