Bush's Surveillance State
Still have doubts that the Bush/Cheney administration, with the cooperation of Congressional Republicans and Capitol Hill Democratic lapdogs like Jay Rockefeller, Harry Reid, Jane Harman, and other Blue Dog Democrats, are creating a surveillance state here in the US? Doubt no longer; they are.
Eisenhower's warning of the domination of our nation by the military-industrial complex; an Orwellian world of spying on American citizens and destroying their constitutional rights; and a proto-fascist state of government-corporate tyranny are almost the grim reality under the authoritarian, right wing Bush administration.
Today's New York Times reports on this frightening expectation. During his interview on Friday by Bill Moyers, Keith Olbermann warned that this dictatorial administration, which is damaging our country, has caused a national emergency.
It is an emergency and a crisis...for us all. Many progressive bloggers, like Glenn Greenwald, Digby, Firedoglake, and others including yours truly, have been sounding the alarm about the creeping, now full blown, secretive surveillance state designed by the Bush administration and his reactionary, right wing Republican henchmen and women, with corporate complicity, that is suppressing and has been incrementally destroying our constitutional rights.
George Orwell could have been describing the Bushites when he said, "During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act;" or Aldous Huxley when he said, "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."
Benjamin Franklin warned: "Those who are willing to sacrifice their basic liberties to assure their security deserve neither."
I would add that Bush and his supporters who wish to suppress or destroy our liberties are tyrants.
Edmund Burke observed that, "The people never give up their liberties but under some delusion."
We already have a delusional president. Let's hope the majority of the American people are lucid, intelligent, and totally, absolutely unwilling to have their rights, that almost 4,000 of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have died to defend, suppressed or taken away.
