Concern and Hubris

This is cause for great concern. As the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), continues through December 14 in Bali, another global environmental alarm is sounded about the rapid Arctic ice melt.

An article by AP reports
"White sea ice reflects about 80 percent of the sun's heat off Earth, NASA's [climate scientist, Jay] Zwally said. When there is no sea ice, about 90 percent of the heat goes into the ocean which then warms everything else up. Warmer oceans then lead to more melting.

"That feedback is the key to why the models predict that the Arctic warming is going to be faster," Zwally said. "It's getting even worse than the models predicted."

Of course, under King George's regime, the US refuses to commit to mandatory caps on greenhouse gasses.  He doesn't want to prevent his oil, gas and coal cronies from making billions more while polluting the atmosphere.

Meanwhile, this is myopic hubris. Robert Gates, Secretary of Defense, says that NATO must fill in the gaping holes in the Afghanistan operation because the US must concentrate on Iraq.

Like most Bushite Republicans, Gates seem to have trouble with his memory.

US troops went to Afghanistan in 2001 in Operation Enduring Freedom.  That was where Usama bin Laden, the mastermind of 9-11 who King George said he was no longer concerned about, was dug in on the Afghan/Pakistan border. But, Bush pulled US troops out of Afghanistan to fight in his preemptive invasion and occupation of Iraq. Not only is the situation in Iraq a failure but Afghanistan, which could have been a success, has deteriorated rapidly due to Bush's Iraq debacle and the strain on the US Army.

True to form, Bush and his Bushite toadies and Iraq war supporters want others to clean up their messes at home and abroad.
