House Democratic Leaders Fail US Again

House Democratic leadership failed to override Bush's veto of SCHIP legislation. The 273 yeas and 156 nays were less than the two-thirds needed to defeat Bush's veto. No surprise there given the Congressional Democratic leadership's record so far. While Bush's approval numbers are at a Nixonian 24%, Congress is even lower at 11%.  With leadership like this, it's no wonder.

Not being able to override a Bush veto on such an important bill shows that the Democratic majority doesn't know how to control or direct the legislative process. They continue to be defeated by the GOP because they haven't discarded their mind set of recent lengthy minority status and keep getting the rug pulled out from under them even though they know it's going to happen.  That's insane.

Nancy Pelosi hasn't really been an effective House majority leader and is unable to control the Bush Dogs or the other leadership members. Steny Hoyer and Rahm Emanuel go their merry way making deals that are the antithesis of what real Democrats, members of the People Party, should stand for.  Hoyer and Emanuael are aptly described by David Sirota as members of the Money Party.

Sirota says, "Emanuel was the architect of NAFTA who used the prospect of his being in the majority on the Ways and Means Committee to suck corporate cash out of Wall Street. Hoyer bragged on his website about starting his own K Street Project, and, as I documented in Hostile Takeover, one of his top legislative staffers serves simultaneously as an official for his corporate fundraising operation - 'nuff said."

In addition to showing their incompetency on overriding SCHIP, the House Democratic leadership, for the first time since the Democrats became the majority in the House, had to pull a bill from the floor. It was the FISA bill. Why? They didn't have the votes to defeat the Republicans because Dems were screwed by a GOP parliamentary maneuver.

This comment on TPM Election Central was very incisive about the pulled FISA bill.  oleeb wrote on October 17, 2007 6:55 PM:
"The Pelosi/Hoyer/Emmanuel leadership team is thoroughly incompetent. Why are they even allowing amendments? The Rules Committee decides the terms of debate including how much time will be allocated to which side and how many amendments will be allowed. What a bunch of pathetic whores and cowardly losers they are."
Let's see what Pelosi/Hoyer/Emanuel plan to do about SCHIP and FISA now.  We know the Senate Dems have already caved on FISA or as they call it, "reaching an agreement with the Bush administration."

Maybe outside the beltway Democrats should begin thinking about 2008 and beyond as an opportunity to actually rebuild the party (2006 was not the monumental beginning of change many grassroots Dems thought).  It should be an opportunity to start "retiring" many of the Dems, especially the so-called leadership, who have been in the House and Senate during 1995 to 2006 and suffer from an incurable disease, permanent minority status on the brain, whose symptoms include spinelessness, cluelessness, and myopia.
